Mrs Jade Carnaffan
In Science we will be exploring everyday materials and what they are best used for.
We will be working scientifically to find the best soap product for making bubbles, making predictions and preform simple tests trying to keep the test fair.
We will be carrying out and investigating the melting process using a range of foods, making ice cream in a bag and making pizza dough to investigate its properties by rolling twisting, flattening and cutting. We have a trip to Pizza Express to look forward to too!
We are trying to link maths in with our topic wherever possible to apply skills to real life situations. We will being learning:
- How to estimate and measure temperature, capacity and volume using a variety of equipment.
- Place value-one more than and one less than. Using <, > and = symbols to showing understanding of number value.
- Addition– knowing number bonds, adding 3, 1-digit numbers and knowing addition can be done in any order.
- Multiplication– using arrays to calculate.
- Different ways to make amounts using money.
- Finding fractions of amounts.
- How to describe position and directions.
We will be learning to count in steps of 2s, 5s and 10s
Each week your child has a set of spellings to learn.
They have space in their books to practise and to write sentences using the words. Every child learns differently so it might be that you help your child by asking them to spell it out loud, write them closing their eyes or any other weird and wonderful way that works for them! We are working really hard on learning the spellings that are from the national curriculum for year 1 and 2. Some will seem very difficult but we are looking at them everyday in school to practise as much as possible.
There will also be weekly tasks in homework books linked to our topic. This will be given on Fridays and due back in the following Friday.
It would be really helpful if you could listen to your child read at home as much as possible too.
We will be learning how to:
- take photos,
- save them
- retrieve them.
- We will learn how to use the internet safely.
- We will use computers to present our work differently.
In English we will be using our topic as a vehicle to learn about different types of text.
We will look at non fiction texts and their different features. We will start off by writing instruction and recipes. Following that we will be looking at poetry and writing our own acrostic poems and riddles.
We will be practising our handwriting weekly aiming to keep our letters on the line and consistent in size.
By the end of year 2 we would like to see joined up handwriting.
Reading is a really important skill to enable children to access many areas of the curriculum. We work really hard to help children’s reading progress across the year.
We have daily phonics lessons, we will aim to listen to each child read at least 3 times a week and we encourage lots of discussion about books. Reading should be enjoyable and we dedicate a part of each school day to work on it. Within reading time children may take part in group read, they may work on their comprehension as well as having the opportunity to enjoy stories and books independently and with friends.
This term our topic is called Muck, Mess and Mixtures.
As you have probably guessed from the title we will be exploring all sorts of different ways to get messy. We will be using this topic as a stimulus across the curriculum. The children will enjoy learning through their senses and having the opportunity to play, make and discover a variety of textures and materials.
We will start our term by sharing George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl as a whole class read and making some revolting recipes for his Granny!
We are really lucky again this term and have the team from STFC coming in to teach our class for an hour a week.
Please could you keep P.E. kits in school for the half term and we will send it home to be washed. This way it is in school for spares and for P.E. on different days.
Please send warm clothes as this will be done outdoors , weather permitting.
