Mathematics overview

The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent
  • Reason mathematically
  • Can solve problems

With this in mind, our aim at Long Mountain is to provide a platform on which all pupils can achieve and make progress in the subject, develop a deep understanding of its concepts, and foster a love for learning maths.

Our approach

Maths teaching recognises the importance of beginning with the familiar and moving to more abstract ideas, and the fact that every pupil learns in a different way. Concepts are delivered using the following approach, aiming to support pupils to move their learning from concrete (familiar) ideas, to pictorial representations, and finally to work with abstract ideas, when they're ready.


Usually children begin to learn about numbers using ‘concrete’ things –something they can hold and move.

Examples: cubes, beads or counters, but you can use anything at home: sticks, smarties, chocolate, lego bricks, coins, cheerios…


Children can use pictures to understand and calculate with numbers.

Examples: pictures of cubes, beads or counters. They may use hundred squares, numbers lines or just draw a picture of something to help count it.


When children have a deeper understanding of numbers, they're able to use and manipulate them using figures (or numerals).

Examples: number sentences such as ‘4 + 6 = 10’, or more complex workings such as column addition: 

+ 458
= 634

It's important to note that children develop in different ways and at different times. Each approach is used across the school and is adapted to children’s needs, whatever their age or ability.


By the time they leave Long Mountain Primary School our aim is that pupils:

  • Enjoy maths and feel confident to explore many aspects of the subject
  • Become fluent with the basics of mathematics
  • Experiment with numbers; adopting flexible, open-ended approaches
  • Are encouraged to think clearly and logically for themselves
  • Are encouraged to reason and conjecture in maths
  • Work both independently and through participation and collaboration with others
  • Can use their mathematical knowledge to solve a variety of problems
